UCONN BASKETBALL:
A GREAT FUTURE STARTS NOW

The historic year of philanthropic success at the University of Connecticut was driven by support for the Division of Athletics, specifically the new UCONN Basketball Champions Center.

Working with a volunteer steering committee of board members and dedicated friends of the University, the UConn Foundation secured key gifts, chief among them was a $4.5-million pledge from Peter J. and Pamela H. Werth, whose contribution is the largest-ever single private gift to support the Division of Athletics.

"UConn Basketball is part of the fabric of our state, and we know that this facility will help the men's and women's teams be successful for years to come," they said. "We hope that other UConn fans, who derive the same joy from the Huskies as we do, will support this project so that construction can begin as soon as possible."

Several key donors took the Werths' leadership to heart, and have stepped forward to make their own gifts, including Webster Bank, two anonymous donors who each contributed $1 million and many others.

This outpouring of philanthropic investment in the future of UConn basketball has now allowed the UConn Foundation to begin construction of the facility (related link).

Denis and Britta Nayden, alumni and long-standing donors to the University of Connecticut, have donated $3 million towards the new UConn Basketball Champions Center and for scholarships for student athletes.

A key feature of the gift is a challenge match to all former UConn Husky basketball players who contribute to the new center. MORE

A GREAT SEASON AHEAD

We're off to a great season of UConn basketball, with both the men and women starting strong against nationally ranked programs, and the next few weeks will offer many chances to see some great basketball...check out the men's and women's schedules.

If you haven't been to Storrs recently, you're missing out on s201311-Basketball-Champions-Center-Construction.jpgeeing firsthand the transformation of the UConn Basketball Champions Center. We wanted to take a moment to share some construction photos from this week with you, and express our gratitude for your ongoing support of this historic project. Click on the thumbnail on the right or this link to see the progress on-site.

You may have noticed one transformation already: the name. The UConn Basketball Champions Center is a fitting title to a facility that honors our past and develops our future national champion basketball programs. As we continue to successfully fundraise for naming opportunities in the center (see the current list of reserved spaces), we look forward to adding another name to the front and making a lasting mark on the future of UConn Athletics.

We hope to see you at a game soon, and we thank you for your support of UConn Basketball. Should you have any questions about the philanthropic options available at the UConn Basketball Champions Center, please contact our development office at (860) 486-3863 or uconnclub@foundation.uconn.edu
