Through the integration of teaching, research, and service, it is the mission of the University of Connecticut to provide an outstanding educational experience for each student. The mission of the Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD) is to enhance this experience for students with disabilities. Our goal is to ensure a comprehensively accessible University experience where individuals with disabilities have the same access to programs, opportunities and activities as all others. The Center is also committed to promoting access and awareness as a resource to all members of the community.
While complying with the letter of the law, the CSD also embraces its spirit by providing services to all students with permanent or temporary injuries and conditions to ensure that all University programs and activities are accessible. The Center can assist students with maximizing their potential while helping them develop and maintain independence. Our philosophy is one that promotes self-awareness, self-determination, and self-advocacy in a comprehensively accessible environment.
These services are provided to students through accommodations and enhanced services. The CSD engages in an interactive process with each student and reviews requests for accommodations on an individualized, case-by-case basis. Depending on the nature and functional limitations of a student’s documented disability, he/she may be eligible for academic and/or residential accommodations. In addition, the Center offers enhanced services to UConn students through the Beyond Access, Husky GPS and CSDTech programs.
Beyond Access (BA) provides an opportunity for students to work smarter, not harder, in a competitive academic environment while also preparing for life beyond college. Students enrolled in BA work closely with a trained Strategy Instructor (SI) to design and customize their program based on their individual goals and learning profile. Students can choose to meet with their SI for three hours a week (Track I) or one hour per week (Track II) to work on developing skills such as: time management and organization, study skills, stress management, self-advocacy, memory and concentration, social skills, career preparation, health and wellness, and reading and writing strategies.
Husky GPS(Getting Prepared for Success) offers returning and new students (first year or transfer) an opportunity to learn about what it takes to be a successful student at UConn. Using both an online and online/on-campus, hybrid learning environment, Husky GPS helps to prepare students for a successful transition into UConn, academically, socially, and emotionally.
CSDTech is a program that provides students with software, apps, hardware and technology based academic strategies that relate to the nature of the students’ learning needs to enhance their pursuit of academic, social, and career goals.
