“All school personnel must realize the impact of trauma, recognize the need for trauma-informed care, and develop the skills to create an environment that is responsive to the needs of trauma-exposed students.”

— Sandra Chafouleas, Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of Educational Psychology and co-director, Collaboratory on School and Child Health

A silent epidemic is unfolding in our schools. School shootings, cyberbullying, and other instances of violence, abuse, and trauma experienced by students within — and beyond — school grounds are contributing in part to a mental health crisis of national scale.

At the forefront in addressing these challenges are experts from the Neag School of Education who are engaged in holistic research focused on establishing healthy, safe, and supportive learning environments for all schoolchildren. These scholars are pursuing research and seeking to implement evidence-based practices directed toward improving school, child, and teacher health and well-being.
