Andrew W. Taylor ’12 (BUS) and his girlfriend, Colleen Kelly, have reached a mutual understanding.

When they come to UConn Day at the Yankees, where the Yankees take on their archrivals, the Red Sox, they don’t talk to each other the whole nine innings.

“We’ll cheer, naturally, when our team does well, but we won’t make eye contact,” said Andrew, only half joking. “It’s the only way to keep it civil.”

Andrew is a passionate Yankees fan while Colleen, who grew up north of Boston, is a diehard Red Sox fan. Like many couples with divided loyalties, the UConn game can be a little intense. But that’s all part of the fun at one of the most popular alumni events of the year.

UConn Day at the Yankees and UConn Day at the Mets are both coming up in August, and the swag is even better this year: a full-size team jersey with the UConn logo. More than 1,400 alums and friends came to the Yankees game last year, and this year’s tickets are selling fast.

“It really is one of best events of the summer. It’s always well-attended, and people come and enjoy the summer weather,” said Andrew, a digital strategist for the NBA, who helps organize UConn alumni events in New York City.

This year, UConn Day at the Yankees will be held Friday, Aug. 2 at 7:05 p.m. in Yankee Stadium. Alums can gather prior to the game at 5 p.m. at the Hard Rock Café attached to the stadium. The pinstriped team jersey will include the Yankees logo on the front and the UConn Husky on the sleeve.

UConn Day at the Mets, when the team takes on the Washington Nationals, will be Sunday, Aug. 11 at 1 p.m. at Citi Field. Alums can meet beforehand at 10 a.m. at Mikkeller Brewing at the stadium. The light blue team jersey for this game will feature Mr. Met on the left sleeve, the UConn Husky on the right, and the word “New York” emblazoned across the front.
