Mr. Newton came to the UConn Foundation in 2013 as President & CEO and has since then been working closely with UConn President Susan Herbst and her administration in successfully increasing fundraising efforts, with a focus on increasing scholarship support for students. Additionally, Mr. Newton has worked to strengthen engagement of UConn alumni and other constituents with the University, bringing together alumni relations under the umbrella of the Foundation and creating a unified approach to our outreach.Previously as vice president for University Development at Emory University in Atlanta, he was a driving force behind a successful $1.7 billion fundraising campaign that ranks as the largest in the school’s history. Prior assignments at Emory included assistant vice president for health sciences development and senior associate vice president for arts and sciences development. A graduate of Belmont Abbey College, Mr. Newton’s fundraising experience also includes Converse College and Presbyterian Hospital. He currently serves as Secretary on the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) International Board. Mr. Newton holds the designation of Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) and is a member of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). Mr. Newton is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Hartford Stage.

Colleen has been with the UConn Foundation since 2000, serving in several roles of increasing responsibility and most recently as Chief of Staff. She began working at UConn in 1996 as a program manager in the School of Engineering Dean’s office. At the Foundation, Colleen is an integral part of the President’s office and her responsibilities include identifying and resolving organizational and external complex problems, providing oversight and guidance to projects, as well as planning and directing operational activities for the Foundation’s President & CEO.
Suzanne O'Conor

Suzanne manages and coordinates legal work for all departments within the Foundation. Before assuming her current role as counsel in 2000, Suzanne served as a development officer in charge of planned gifts from 1995 to 1999. Prior to joining the Foundation, Suzanne was an associate at Shipman & Goodwin. She is a member of the Connecticut Bar Association and the American Bar Association. Suzanne graduated with high honors with a J.D. from the University of Connecticut School of Law, and with honors with a B.A. in economics from the College of Holy Cross.

Jerry is the chief financial officer for the UConn Foundation, where he oversees all accounting functions and management of the funds benefiting the University. He previously served as the CFO for the Florida State University Foundation, where he was responsible for overseeing its $550 million investment portfolio. Jerry began his career in public accounting at Ernst & Whinney in Reading, Penn., and moved into the higher education field in 1991, where he became the chief financial officer of Johnson College in Scranton, Penn. and later Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Bloomsburg University, also in Penn., and earned his MBA from Florida State University. Jerry is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a member of AICPA.

Brian’s responsibilities include planning and implementing effective principal fundraising strategies and working with key university administrators and volunteers to identify and solicit the University’s top donors and prospects. Since joining the Foundation in 1998, Brian has held several major gift and management positions including the assistant vice president for campaign planning and vice president of development positions overseeing athletics, health center, annual giving, planned giving, corporate and foundation relations and constituent fundraising programs. Prior to joining the UConn Foundation, he served as a development and major gifts officer at Cheshire Academy, a preparatory school in Cheshire, Conn. Brian earned a B.A. from Castleton State College and an E.M.B.A. from the School of Business at the University of Connecticut.

As Vice President for Development, Jake oversees planned giving, corporate and foundation relations, constituent, health, and athletic fundraising programs. Prior to joining the Foundation, he served as Assistant Vice President for Development and Principal Gifts at Florida State University, with gift planning, regional development, performing arts, and principal gifts in his purview. He also held development positions at the University of Mississippi as development officer for the School of Pharmacy and at the University of Alabama at Birmingham as Assistant Athletic Director for Development. Jake earned a BBA and MBA from the University of Mississippi and a certificate of financial planning from Florida State University.

“Mo,” as she is called by family, friends, and colleagues, leads and works alongside UConn’s Alumni Relations staff and hundreds of volunteers to engage and connect more than 230,000 UConn alumni worldwide. With more than 18 years of alumni relations experience, Mo has extensive experience in strategic planning, budget management, board development, program development, and fundraising.Mo received both her bachelor’s degree and M.Ed. from Bowling Green University. She is an active member of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
Derek Slap
Derek Slap, Vice President for Marketing & Communications

Derek Slap oversees communications, external relations, events and stewardship at the Foundation. Before arriving at the foundation in September 2014, Derek was the chief of staff for the Connecticut Senate Democratic Caucus, where he advanced initiatives on pre-K education and gun violence reduction. He lectures at Yale and Central Connecticut State Universities, leading seminars on political journalism and public policy. Derek was previously director of public information for the City of New Haven and a news anchor on WVIT-TV, an NBC affiliate. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University and earned his MBA from the University of Connecticut.
Teresa Johnston, Director of Human Resources

Teresa Johnston, Director of Human Resources, joined the UConn Foundation in June of 2015 and has overall responsibility for all aspects of the Human Resources Department. Prior to joining the UConn Foundation, she was the Associate Chief HR Officer for Community Health Center, Inc., where she led a team of HR professionals responsible for staffing, employee relations, compensation, HRIS and operations. Teresa’s additional experience includes various consulting assignments, higher education and positions of increasing responsibility in for-profit organizations. Teresa holds a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Kansas and a master’s of education from the University of Hartford.
